Uses for fish skin

Fish skin contains high amounts of collagen, a type of protein that is also found in human skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments. Leftover skins are often ground and made into protein powder, however skins also contain plenty of mercury and pollutant toxins.

Other uses for fish skin include Pet food.

Fish skins can be used to treat burn wounds.

History of fish leather

The hide of marine animals has been used for clothing and practical objects for millennia. Think seal, snake, crocodile skin, whale fat, feathers. All materials that have been put to use in rich cultural histories.

Fish leather tanneries have faded into the background since the industrial age, However, with increasing demand for alternatives for to commercial leather, the industry around fish leather is thriving.

Sustainability

We are dedicated to developing tanning methods which are not harmful to the environment and dealing with suppliers who can also be transparent in their operations. We trade only in skins that are by-products of the fishing industry. We source our leathers from MSc certified fisheries that discard skins. Skins are hand sorted and largest skins are chosen to make leathers.

Most of our fish originates from fish farms in Northern Europe, North Sea, North Atlantic.

We will always try to use recycled packaging and ensure transport of leathers is to a minimum.
